The City of Huntsville opened a new urban park today on the former site of the first Butler High School at 2620 Clinton Avenue. Officially dedicated as S.R. Butler Green, the new park honors the legacy of Butler High’s namesake who was a leading Huntsville educator from 1890 to 1930.
“We are honored to retain the ‘Butler’ name for the thousands of students, teachers, administrators and staff who experienced Butler High during its 64 years in Huntsville,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “This new community park is our gift to Butler alumni and to our citizens.”
The two-acre park adjoins Campus No. 805, a redevelopment of the old Butler High, and later Stone Middle School that features craft breweries, restaurants and entertainment. The park includes an open green lawn ringed by trees that can be used for concerts and picnics, festivals and touch football. There is a small stage for musicians to perform, a food truck lane with electrical hookups for eight vendors, and more than 200 adjacent parking spaces.
“We are excited to include this park as part of a major urban redevelopment for West Huntsville,” said Shane Davis, Urban Development Director. “Butler Green and Campus No. 805 are helping fulfill a vision outlined by citizens in our BIG Picture master plan for more vibrant and dynamic live, work and play environments.”
Parks and Recreation Director Steve Ivey believes Butler Green offers residents a new model for an urban park. “Many of our residents, especially our young professionals, want more green spaces where they can relax outdoors, but still have easy access to dining and entertainment. Butler Green offers both through organized events and food trucks and its proximity to new restaurants and craft breweries.”
